Tulisan means ‘handwriting’ in Bahasa Indonesia. This simple word is symbolic of making your mark while staying true to yourself and sharing your experience with others. To those who wear our collections, it is about colorful storytelling through handcrafted products made with love in small batches. Tulisan began as a home-based art studio in Jakarta filled with dedicated people who simply believed in each other and were determined to follow their dreams.
Jakarta is not London, Paris, New York or any other great city. Despite its pollution and bumper-to-bumper traffic, living in Jakarta is about taking chances, being close to family, and having true friends. It is a melting pot where you will find many inspiring minds and undiscovered talent. Appearances are often deceiving. This is definitely the case with a chaotic city like Jakarta, but once you delve into its inner beauty you realize that this is a place brimming with vitality and an abundance of untapped creative energy.
From start to finish, each Tulisan product is made by a team of passionate artists in Indonesia. My team consists of determined individuals who honor their intuitions and project the very best of their being. Many of them have crossed over from their academic or professional background to pursue what they do today for Tulisan. Together we empower each other to achieve what we never thought was possible. The resulting experience is often a nerve-racking journey to self-discovery.
Through Tulisan, I hope to convey a different perspective on Jakarta and to present honest creations from the heart of its people.
Founding Artist and Creative Director of Tulisan
Our team is a dynamic guild of storytellers, poets, illustrators, and talented dreamers who love what they do and put their heart and soul into every Tulisan product they help create.
Melissa and her mother started Tulisan in 2010 with tea towels, aprons, and cushion covers. For her first tote prototype, Melissa worked out of her garage alongside an upholstery tailor using her grandmother’s Singer sewing machine from the 1940s. Today this antique sewing machine is still used in the creation of all of our home ware collections.
‘Tulisan’ (pronounced two-lee-saan) means ‘handwriting’ in Indonesian. This simple word is about making your mark while staying true to yourself and sharing with others. It is about colorful storytelling through handcrafted products made with love in small batches.
Our illustrations and products are each based on a story. Some stories are original fiction while others are inspired by traditional folktales.
New collections arrive on a quarterly basis and include resort/cruise, spring/summer, and fall/winter. As the store is an exhibition space for Melissa’s creativity, new products that are exclusively sold in-store are introduced every two weeks.
All illustrations are hand-drawn with pen and ink by Melissa Sunjaya. Her drawings are detailed and spontaneous, allowing mistakes to take part in her creative expression. Her style is distinguished by her playful use of symbolism and bold color palettes.
Due to the nature of our production method, slight irregularities on our prints are normal adding character and enhancing the uniqueness of each piece.
Tulisan’s Giclées are printed using a state-of-the art digital printing method and museum-quality archival inks. Please do not expose Giclée prints to direct sunlight.
