This mind battle led me to find new possibilities within the ‘inlander’ stigma, which often comes like a thick cloud blinding my vision and dwarfing my self-esteem. For this reason, I chose hand-pulled serigraph as my primary medium for expressing my thoughts because this method naturally captures doubts and imperfections of the printer’s arm movements. It’s a poetic process by itself, creating every print as a unique emotional statement.
I created large screens that make the process impossible for consistent colour application. These large screens require two serigraph technicians to apply the pigment in synchronisation. One needs to trust and be brave to let go. The other needs to be reliable and vigilant in every print setting. Our open-air studio provides an unpredictable humidity level and disturbing dust particles, so there is always a tendency for 1-2 cm shrinkage in every colour application. The set up of the studio prompts another challenge for registering the layers of colour. We can never predict what we get from one printing process, and we always need to have the agility to make adjustments when printing the next colour set.
‘Amma and Destiny’ edition involves five colour layers: ‘Bluejay’, ‘Mandarin Red’, ‘Strawberry Ice’, ‘Oxblood Red’, and ‘Butterum’. We use ecological water-based pigments, which creates transparency of every colour stroke. It’s impossible to hide any printing mistake with the transparent characteristic because every mistake has its beauty.
As an artist with a printmaking passion, I was disturbed by Jakarta’s serigraph industry’s degrading dignity. I wish to bring forth a new podium for ‘serigraph in Jakarta’, where it becomes a stage for dignified skill, ethical job, and artistic merit. When I started in 2010, some thought I was crazy because I abandoned my celebrated design profession in Los Angeles. Some even said that I was dipping into my midlife crisis. Today, after 11 years in the job, I managed to build a passionate team to actualise a small part of this dream. Of course, I still have doubts and fears. But upon every vulnerable moment, I am humbled and re-enchanted by the colours of my dreams. These colours guide me to dance gracefully with my destiny. So I hope that the colours of ‘Amma and Destiny’ will enchant your days with good spirit too.
Have an enchanted weekend,
Melissa Sunjaya
In celebrating the Year of the Ox, we are giving out our exclusive ‘angpao’ to our beloved collectors (one red envelope for every purchase of Rp100,000 online or at our lovely boutiques). It is multipliable under one transaction. Please note that we only produced a limited number of this exquisite envelope. The vintage-inspired design of the strong ox makes it an excellent keepsake, so let us tell you a little fact about this ox illustration.
'Bhanteng' or ‘banteng’, the Javan Wild Ox, is classified as endangered species on the IUCN Red List. According to mongabay.co.id environmental journals, Javan Wild Ox is the second endangered species to be successfully cloned. Through conservation, the banteng population in 2015 were only less than 50 species. This population increased to 124-140 in 2019. However, we are still facing the inevitable threat of inbreeding for banteng, due to lack of genetic diversity. This inbreeding depression causes several mutations, congenital disabilities, and smaller species size. Nevertheless, banteng remains to be a sacred symbol in Indonesian culture.
Banteng is also a visual representation of the fourth of five principles of Pancasila – Indonesia's fundamental philosophy. Pancasila’s fourth principle states: "Democracy guided by the inner wisdom in the unanimity arising out of deliberations among representatives''. It underlines the necessity of analysing multiple perspectives (including the opposition’s views) without prejudice before making the final decision. It is wisdom to be mindful of our own words and consider the impact of our actions on others.
Like this ‘angpao’, we have made every Tulisan product with philosophy and thoughts behind it. We hope you appreciate our story.
Have a lovely day,
Tulisan Chronicles Team
Our modern work culture enforces regular sessions of honest discussions to evaluate changes in work methods and personal attitudes, allowing all of us to talk about our own mistakes and concerns openly with dignity.
The more comfortable we see our vulnerabilities, the more agile we become in overcoming severe challenges, and the more trust we build in our team. Trust and agility made us survive the turbulence of Covid-19 pandemic, where many businesses like ours had to face an unfortunate end.
Your supports have made it possible for us to launch several sustainable projects, such as AIR Farand R. Hazfanur. Within the first six months, the AIR project has generated over Rp70,000,000 for Farand's royalty – a fund that significantly aids his life with a cerebral palsy disability. All our home accessories are hand-stitched through a sustainable program with KDM. It benefits several unemployed women who live in Jakarta's rural areas by providing fair pay and dignified work conditions. Furthermore, we've sold many Pepe Dolls by KDM. Through Pepe Dolls, the proceeds benefit the welfare of abandoned street children, currently sheltered under KDM. When you purchase Tulisan products, you are supporting many projects with social causes.
Thank you for drumming up strength!

What motivates me when I wake up in the morning is to think about a few changes I can do to make today better than my yesterdays. I realise that change often involves evaluating my old habit and having an awareness of shifting my attitude. I have spent a lot of time reading articles on conscious consumption and planning grocery shopping to be friendlier for our environment.
Most markets have indeed reduced disposable shopping bags. However, when I stand in line for the cash register, I can't help noticing that my grocery items are packaged by various disposable materials, such as PET bottles, aluminium sealed packs, and plastic coated cartons.
It's hard to change my routine of buying pre-packaged liquid soaps until I read about zero-waste grocery shopping. So now I try to find alternative eco markets which offer 'scoop and weigh' services.
At first I find it hard to believe that bringing empty bottles when shopping for groceries can reduce my carbon footprint. This zero-waste grocery guide prompts me to plan a shopping list and prepare empty bulk bags, jars, and containers.
I keep a few of these empty containers always handy inside the trunk of my car, for in case I make stops at any bakery or market. Tulisan's Toy boxes, Atelier boxes, and Dustbags are suitable for grocery carriers, and even more, for organising the mess inside my car trunk.
Club Sehat is one of my prefered health stores focusing on vegan, organic, non GMO products, and other plant-based options for groceries. Besides their online shop, they have three locations in Jakarta, and they are also available in most local e-commerce marketplaces.
Their shop in Jalan Gunawarman, at South Jakarta, is cosy and has everything that I love. Here are some of my must-buy items:
Cranberry seeds
Goji berry seeds
Roasted almonds
Wild honey from NTT
Moringa bar soap
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” –Margaret Mead.
As an influential cultural anthropologist, Mead’s views bring hope to the few individuals who dare to make radical changes in their lives.
I am excited to see that more and more people in Jakarta are becoming conscious shoppers. The change in our habit will certainly induce social revolution for a healthier environment. Change often requires stepping out of our comfort zone and questioning the status quo.
Warm wishes,
Melissa Sunjaya
Moms are getting extra pressure to think creatively inside the box they lovingly called ‘home’. Since the WFH enforcement in 2020, our Atelier box is receiving sudden popularity amongst our passionate collectors. So we decided to ask a few people about what they love about our Atelier box.
Some ladies love its simplicity and the open form, as their second carry-on bag. In some airlines, this Atelier box fits snug underneath the passenger seat. The four inner pockets provide storage spaces for personal sanitiser, books, pens, and wallets.
It is transportable storage for binders, files, electronic tablet, laptop, and chargers. Working and online learning all day at home can drive us crazy, so having portable office storage makes it convenient for us to move our workspace around, from the breakfast table, our garden patio, and even to our car.
We designed our Atelier boxes to have a height suitable to place them on cabinets or work stations, for your magazine collection, haberdashery, or painting tools. Periodically we issue different limited edition printed textiles and vibrant colour combinations, so our atelier boxes can give magical themes to your creative spaces.
Have fun organising your space!

Unlike the others, a person with the strong ox's personality sets the plan to get to the final goal without any grudge. The energy of the ox never allows any procrastinations or doubts. This enthusiastic character is what sets the ox apart from the others.
This animal has an acute sense of smell and hearing, especially towards danger and predators. When a predator is approaching, an ox will quickly signal its herd. It has a very systematic defence system towards a predator attack, with the males on the front line allowing the youngest and female species in the pack to first run into hiding places. Like the animal, people with ox's personality are sensitive to threats, excellent leaders, straight forward, reliable, and responsible.
It is a common misunderstanding that an ox hates red colour. An ox is actually colour blind. When the matador is holding a red flag in a bullfight, the flag's motion and sound provoke the ox. Red dramatises the act for the audience in all the bullfights in Spain, also known as ‘Corrida de Toros’. As the bullfight takes the centre stage, red colour narrates the language of seduction, confidence, courage, and adventure.
Like the ‘Corrida de Toros’, many other cultures view red through its powerful ancestral traditions. February is also vividly coloured in red, with the Gong Xi Fa Cai and Valentine’s Day celebrations. In China, this is the colour of luck, happiness, and vitality. In the West, red is a message of love and affection. As we step into a new era of cultural crossover, the way we wear our contemporary red outfit in celebrating our traditions might be the first step in taking charge of our destiny.
Have fun wearing red,
Tulisan Chronicles Team
It is a symbol of sharing fortunes and protections from the elders to the younger generations. The central importance of 'Ang Pao' is not about the money, but about giving a sincere blessing in the red packet.
Do you know the story of 'Ang Pao'? This lucky red envelopes tradition started during the Song Dynasty (960–1279) in China. One of the few ancient legends on Ang Pao said that once there was a demon called Sui. Sui brought menace and bad omen to the whole village. Many soldiers and warriors fought desperately to get rid of this demon, but all failed dreadfully.
One day, there was a young boy with a magical sword who faced this terrible Sui. The brave boy slaughtered the demon and restored peace to the community. The next day, all the village elders gave the boy many red envelopes as a sign of deep respect and gratitude.
Tulisan presents a selection of scarlet coloured gifts, ranging from our exclusive 'Ang Pao', a set of 12 lucky petite boxes, and other premium gifts of handmade accessories. A vintage illustration of the strong ox symbol decorates our red envelopes in luxurious gold ink over a luminous coral red surface. To make it easier to celebrate this Lunar Year with families and friends, we offer personalised greetings and free-deliveries in Java & Bali.
Have a lovely day,

With all the turmoil and madness of 2020, we have managed to survive the biggest challenge of our time. It seemed that we rushed through this stressful period furiously fast without any pause. David Steindl-Rast shared his discipline on practising mindful gratitude in our daily life. His approach is a simple three steps: stop, look, and go.
Étude is a short musical arrangement, usually for a specific instrument, designed as practice material for improving a particular musical skill. ‘Étude5’ is a visual study based on a contemporary musical technique by Arnold Schoenberg, also known as ‘Serialism’. It is a composition system in which all notes are of equal importance. Using the same principle, ‘Étude5’ depicts an abstract arrangement where each colour proposes a unique voice, yet parallel in values. It requires a sensitive sensory experience to take pleasure in this composition.
This visual study has provided an important insight into understanding many communication conflicts concerning the polarity of cultures. Through years of urbanisation, we are uprooted continuously from our childhood areas and relocated into different cultures. Smartphone technology and social media also pose new challenges in human connectivity. More than ever, humans are challenged to listen without prejudice, to be more open-minded, and to have the courage to question our habits. Today we are living in a world where almost every element has multiple perspectives.
Prints Edition ‘Étude5’ was first published in 2018 as part of my visual essay ‘Lelono’.

She stands barefoot on the balcony watching the dancing soldiers of Jathilan. Some folk believe that Jathilan is a dance hiding the secret spirit of the great Java War, to blind the enemy from our desire for freedom. She too has this desire, to be free and wild. It is a mystical night perfumed with uncertainties. A falling star suddenly paints a momentary hope. As if her angel in the sky hears my silence, whispering to heal her loneliness. I kiss her soft lips and press her hands. In between us, there is a time that I wish to freeze. In one thousand magical dreams, I am forever madly in love with my ‘sweetnite’.

TULISAN AIR 2020 (Artist In Residence) is a curatorial program for an exclusive collection of Farand Rasyid Hazfanur (16 years old), a gifted young painter with a Cerebral Palsy disability. On 23 September 2020, we will be presenting a selected list of six Giclée prints from his abstract paintings. Each edition is available in three different sizes. Giclée is a digital print on matte canvas with museum-quality of archival standards, stretched on wooden frames.
Cerebral Palsy does not prevent Farand Rasyid Hazfanur from augmenting his talents in contemporary art. This birth condition prompts severe life challenges. Farand endures disabilities in mobilizing almost all of his body parts and in speaking. After numerous visits to several hospitals and rehabilitation centres, Farand gradually discovers his passion for painting.
Farand grows up within a caring family environment which gives him unconditional love and confidence in his artistic gifts. His work touches upon humanitarian topics that resonate closely to his heart. For example, on family, environment, social issues, inspiring profiles, or his emotional reactions towards something that he sees. In the process, Farand takes the time to prepare a set of colours for expressing these specific topics. Sometimes this colour-selection process takes about a week or more. He uses his left fingers to paint, as holding a brush would be an impossible task in his condition. His medium is acrylic paint on canvas.
Despite his physical limitations, his sensitivity in art unveils extra-ordinary achievements. Galeri Nasional in Jakarta selected and exhibited his paintings. He had a solo exhibition in October 2018 and joined the art show 'Colorful Things' in 2018 at Hadiprana Art Centre. Farand received the 'Character Award' in painting kites at Hadiprana Art Centre.
TULISAN AIR 2020 (TULISAN Artist In Residence) is a program dedicated to creating a sustainable cycle of art edition for inspiring artists, like Farand Rasyid Hazfanur. Our core objective is to support and nurture the artist's creative potential during this residency period. We curate his artwork to manifest a collection of limited edition prints, from Giclée to other wearable art pieces which light our homes and delight our souls.
Yours Sincerely,

“What does it take to be independent and free? it starts with our mind. visualise it. believe it. live it. state that we are free and independent. gather the courage to make the first leap of faith. take small steps. know that making mistakes is part of life. yet with every fall and mistake, we always manage to get up on our feet. again and again. we are not alone in walking this path. we are stronger together. we enable ourselves. we make things with our hands. we tell our stories to the world. the next day, we see that the work of our hands empower others. by making a change that we once thought was impossible. day by day, we reinvent our process so that we can be more loving to the Earth. we push ourselves to the limit, to do wonders and to discover our true purpose. until we are free to celebrate life through art. finally, we understand that in art all colours are of equal importance.”

A great poet was born in Medan, North Sumatra, on 26 July 1922.
His ideas were too early for his time.
He used Bahasa to ignite a revolution in the mind.
His linguistic skills created a movement for freedom.
During war and misery, his poetry opens another window to the imagination.
So eventually we can sense humanity through a different taste.
Thank you, Chairil Anwar, for your Ina Mia.
...
Terbaring di rangkuman pagi
— hari baru jadi —
Ina Mia mencari
hati impi,
Teraba Ina Mia
kulit harapan belaka
Ina Mia
menarik napas panjang
di tepi jurang
napsu
yang sudah lepas terhembus,
antara daun-daunan mengelabu
kabut cinta lama, cinta hilang
Terasa gentar sejenak
Ina Mia menekan tapak di hijau rumput,
Angin ikut
— dayang penghabisan yang mengipas —
Berpaling
kelihatan seorang serdadu mempercepat langkah di
Tengokan.
...
Lying in the lap of morning
—it’s just turned light—
Ina Mia gropes for
the heart of her dream,
Ina Mia touches
just the rind of hope,
Ina Mia
takes a long breath
along the edge of the valley
of passion
that’s been blown away.
Among the leaves gone gray us dust she feels,
trembling for a moment,
the mist of an old love, a lost love.
Ina Mia stands on the green grass.
A breeze springs up, and
—the last of the fan-waving girls—
she turns away
in time to see a soldier hurrying away, around
the corner.

A woman is beautiful because of her strong soul. Adorned with embroidered calligraphy, THE STENOGRAPH SERIES is our collector's edition which reflects Javanese philosophy. We created this hand-pulled serigraph in a limited run, through sustainable and ethical practices in Indonesia. Every artwork is signed and numbered, with a certificate of authenticity. The first edition of our STENOGRAPH bag features artwork 'Suwung Pamrih, Tebih Ajrih', opus no. 1910.
'Suwung Pamrih, Tebih Ajrih' means that if there is no selfishness, there is also no fear. A person with a virtuous heart will face all challenges and help others with this spirit. Never stirred by difficult conditions, his/her actions flow on acceptance, wisdom, and fairness. This life philosophy is a teaching of Raden Mas Panji Sosrokartono, the brother of R. A. Kartini. As a Javanese scholar and a polyglot fluent in 27 foreign languages and ten dialects of the East Indies archipelago, he was instrumental in several important historical events through his professions as a journalist in World War I, the chief translator in the League of Nations, and a spiritual healer. ‘Memoir’ by Muhammad Hatta noted that R. M. P. Sosrokartono, who mastered the isolated language of Basque, served as a translator of the Allied forces when passing through Basque region on a secret mission to hold a truce in Compiègne Forest, Southern France. Signed in secrecy inside a private railway carriage, this armistice of 11 November 1918 ended World War I. The first news covering the armistice was written by him under the pseudonym ‘three stars’ and published through The New York Herald Tribune. He was an elegant portrait of extraordinary wit and unswerving kindness.
The design inspiration of this bag came from stenography, a short-hand writing technique in journalism before the invention of a voice recording device. It uses special symbols that shorten words or sentences to write swiftly and maintain confidentiality. We hope that TULISAN artwork serves as memorabilia on the cultural heritage of Indonesia.

‘Sunrise’ textile design uses floral ornament sketches from one of our classic stories, THE SOUND OF DAWN. This short prose was written and illustrated by Melissa Sunjaya in 2011. It is a metaphor for an awakening of the soul that recognizes that all beings are equal and united in harmony. It’s a new dawn for everyone.
Every life form begins with love. As the first strokes of the sun’s rays fill every inch of space with cosmic kindness, darkness slowly bids farewell. Sleeping creatures start to wake, absorbing energy, and transferring warmth to one another, making the earth beneath happier. Like a conductor who is about to lead a grand symphony, a shiny black cockerel raises itself onto a fence, summoning others to join his sunrise orchestra. Hummingbirds set the opening tune, and daisies dance the cha-cha, while leaves riding on a morning breeze sing a soothing ballad.
Capturing the delicate sound of dawn and surrendering the body to these early minutes of the day is profoundly sublime. It is a brief euphoria that is hardly spoken about and is often missed. I wish to open my eyes to a soft voice whispering that I am loved. These sacred words are a magical spell. I am a simple being, like all other living things in my garden, but with these words, I become a goddess.
Love opens our hearts and minds to unlimited possibilities
Love is the only reason for our existence
Love is a universal gift that does not choose sides
Love is my unconditional gift to you

A mantilla is a Spanish name for a square scarf worn over the head and shoulders. Our Mantilla is fine hand-screened serigraphy on a viscose rayon from sustainable all-natural wood cellulose fibres. This material is breathable as cotton and smooth as silk. The soft and lustrous quality makes it a carefree and comfortable fabric for the tropical weather. This renewable material is biodegradable and eco-friendly.
It was a challenge to bring this design into production, because of the screen size and the fine fabric. The hand-screened printing process took five times longer than our regular print run because the textile is so delicate. We had to extend preparation time since we had to iron all sheets to achieve the best inking impressions. After, we had to make sure that our printing atelier is extra tidy and clean from specks of dust. The highly porous nature of this fabric enables it to absorb the pigment well and produce brilliant colours.
For care and maintenance, please soak and hand-wash in cold water with mild soap for delicate fabrics. Do not twist or rub with force. Make sure to rinse the soap thoroughly. After washing, hang to air dry. Avoid direct sunlight. Do not place in a dryer. To keep the colours, please use a thin fabric (preferably cotton) as an overlay when ironing so that the hot metal iron is not in direct contact with the printed scarf.
There are many ways to wear our Mantilla. You can roll and twist our Mantilla, to wear it as a chic neck shawl or headscarf. As an alternative, you can also wear it as a wrap over your favourite summer dress or skirt. It comes protected inside our traditional Tulisan’s pure-cotton dust bag so that you can keep it safe in your bag as a shoulder blanket when it's a cold day.
We hope you enjoy wearing our limited edition Mantilla. Every piece is handmade with fair and ethical practices.
Have a lovely weekend,
TULISAN CHRONICLES TEAM
Rest assured that we are doing our very best to improve our services. Here's a quick update on our progress.
Last 16 March 2020, Jakarta imposed higher standards for social distancing by urging many businesses and professionals to work from home. In only a short time, our entire team had to adjust our workflow to this change drastically. While maintaining our home shopping services, the biggest challenge for us in a short period of 14 days was to prepare the new systems in the online shopping experience, customer service, production, and logistics.
In the beginning, there were several challenges that we had to solve quickly. First of all, three of our retail outlets which generate our major income had to be closed, while we still need to pay bills for the high monthly overhead. Our office in Darmawangsa Square has only been allowed to maintain our logistics, with a maximum of 3-5 people working in a shorter period of 5 hours a day. When we started this change, only a few of us were accustomed to the advanced technology of virtual project management tools and other digital applications. Many of us had to dive into a speedy learning environment forcefully, for everything in our day-to-day habits change unexpectedly. At the start of April, we were only able to ship on limited days of Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
Packing, boxing, and labeling correctly became a crucial part of our work. Inherently there were human errors that we need to deal with, such as packing the wrong product, misreading a quantity, and placing the wrong label. It's a simple duty, but it takes commitment and a system to deliver a great job. So we set up a shipping assembly line. First, the packer prepares every shipping content according to the packing list. Next in line, the checker ensures the accuracy of the content and applies the shipping label. As the final checkpoint, the wrapper conducts the last control and seals the package for the delivery pick up. If one of the 3 roles discovers a mistake, we pause the entire assembly process until the problem is solved. To ensure everyone's safety and health, we have three teams with different members working on shifts. With this plan, we are now able to minimize errors and run our logistics from Monday to Saturday.
Every customer's satisfaction and excellent quality control become a daily goal that we aim to foster. Alongside this, we continuously improve tulisan.com to serve you better. Only after a short time operating our brand-new online experience, we have received remarkable reviews from our collectors and new followers about both our products and services. It's been encouraging for our team to receive appreciation messages on our progress. So thank you for your patience and understanding.
It's a challenging time for many people and businesses. The state of not knowing what tomorrow will be like often poses serious concerns and fears. To have fear is human and natural. As a team, we learned that courage is not about the absence of fear. Courage is about the agility to respond to this fear. To have courage in facing challenges and uncertainties will give the opening to new opportunities and creativity. Together with you, we have grown our brand organically and fostered a new perspective on hand-made serigraphy in Indonesia. Your love over our brand has supported a fair eco-system of creative minds, designers, and artisans.
Sending you terabytes of thanks,
TULISAN CHRONICLES TEAM

Our products are hand-made and are not of mass production.
We have designed TULISAN PRINTS EDITION motifs to be composed manually in an organic layout arrangement (not through a computer program for pattern making), to obtain a unique print impression on every cutting pattern. Each product is different, and it has been our technical specs and brand DNA since we started in 2010. After printing, we rotated the serigraph sheet before cutting, to avoid having uniformity of the print positions. Many hand-labour methods of the printing process also add variants to the diversity of print impressions.
We use water-based and eco-friendly pigments for our printing. We also print on unbleached pure cotton canvases where there are speckles of cotton seeds. These natural pigments produce transparency of the printing strokes and create uneven colouring on the overall printing, especially when printing on natural fibres. Also, there is a natural shrinkage (10-15 mm) that occurs on each layer of colour during the process due to humidity and temperature. The distinct characteristics of each print give exceptional value in serigraphy.
Due to our hand-made serigraphy process, every printing on each product is unique and varied from one another. It is technically impossible to select the print of each product to be exactly the same on the showcased photos on our site or social media. These photos are for visual references of the products' shapes only. The colours and alignments will never be the same from one printing to another due to this manual labour.
If you are particularly selective on the print impression of the product, we do not advise you to buy online. Unfortunately, all shops are closed now, and we cannot guarantee availability due to our limited quantity production run when we re-open. We will reopen our shops after the pandemic, according to our government's regulations. During the COVID-19 pandemic, only our logistics & fulfilment division is allowed to maintain its regular operations.
Thank you for your kind understanding in this matter.

]]>This original pen-and-ink sketch of ‘Roses’ was first inked in 2009. There are twelve roses in the drawing. The number twelve plays a significant role in the message. It symbolizes a complete cycle of twelve, such as 12 months in a year, 12 hours, 12 zodiac signs, and many more. There is the number ‘1’ which represents completion, perfection, and independence. Then it is paired with number ‘2’, which signifies the other perspective of any given situation. Together as ‘12’, it means harmony.
]]>Twelve roses bloom, a lingering perfume
One falls, the rest blossom tall
Twelve months of dedication
One month of patience, the rest of exhilaration
Twelve hours of love
Seconds to feel, the rest to give

ROSES X { DASA COLLECTION 2020 - 2021 }, comes in 2 colour-ways: Teal Mint and Green Winter. Every piece is hand-screened serigraphy with eco-friendly pigments. It takes about 2-3 days to complete every layer of colour. It is natural to have colour variations and misalignments on the prints. These printing imperfections are due to our manual labour. Thus it is what makes our artisanal products unique. The new highlights of this collection include ‘Ninepin Bag’, ‘Aperitif Bag’, ‘Mungil Bag’, ‘Chemist Bag’, and ‘Hobo Tote’.
This year, we have made some notable upgrades from sustainability aspects. Together with a local laboratory, we have managed to develop a new formula of the protective coatings which covers the overall serigraphy surface and have obtained eco-certification for this formula. This development has reduced the carbon footprint of our production. Thus, our serigraphy atelier is also becoming cleaner. Your love over our products have supported a fair ecosystem of creative artisans and determined dreamers.
We will be launching ROSES X { DASA COLLECTION 2020 - 2021 }
At tulisan.com
Friday, 24 April 2020, starting from 10:00 am
We hope to delight you with this April Edition of ROSES X.

]]>Today is Earth Day. Many of us are facing the biggest concerns of our lives: first of all, our wellbeing in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic and secondly, the future of our children on our planet. We are forced to be apart, yet we are more connected in so many ways. Together in our minds, we are stronger and we believe that we can endure this difficult time. During this global self-isolation period, we have contemplated on current ways of living and how we can make a better tomorrow. Our intention, our health, and our planet are intimately connected. We cannot continue running with greed, instead, we wish to plant the new seeds of empathy so that our planet will be a happier garden.
On Earth Day, we want to thank all of our collectors for supporting us on this journey. Ethical consumption cultivates responsible makers. Many of you have sent encouraging letters of appreciation. Your love over our products has supported a fair ecosystem of creative artisans and determined dreamers. Your supports have nurtured us in creating things with our hands, in small batches. The slow artisanal process allows us to cherish all the natural imperfections of hand-made labour. It also makes us appreciate one another on a deeper level. We hope to protect this bond of trust between us all.
In our hearts, Earth Day is not only today, but it is our everyday will-power. If our action is responsible, the planet will be healed, and our children will have a safer world. As we embrace the new normal, we will continue to improve many things. We have been very vigilant in selecting our resources. The resources we have selected also have to commit to fair and ethical practices. We ensure clean work processes, wastewater management, healthy air ventilation, and safety procedures for the workers as well as a safe final product for the consumer. With all these meticulous steps, TULISAN products stand for celebrating individuality, empowering others, and caring for our planet.
Together, we are stronger.

Happy Kartini’s Day!
She adored mythology, took interest in a vegetarian lifestyle, and detested polygamy. Raden Adjeng Kartini, an Indonesian hero born in Jepara, was one of the pioneers of education and equal rights for women in her time. On 21 April 1879, Kartini was born to an aristocratic family in the Dutch East Indies. This faith had given her the rare opportunity to experience an elite education system at the Dutch primary school in Java. Her dreams of continuing to higher education were not possible, due to the rights and status of Javanese women at that time. Nevertheless, those challenges did not stop her passion to open an intimate community school, to master several languages, to be proficient in financial management, to have a wood-block cutting atelier, and to write an anthology of letters which inspired many on rights equality.
Many inspirations of our product designs came from women who live during the Dutch Colonial period in Indonesia. Times were tough for the proletariat and gender discrimination was high. It took a determined mind to break social pressure. These women became the first female athletes, scholars, pilots, sailors, and spies.
These women who have lived fearlessly for their dreams became inspirations in the founding of TULISAN. Every product is designed for independent women with an enormous passion for life and big dreams. Thus, we also hope that TULISAN artwork could accompany you in following your dreams relentlessly.
TULISAN CHRONICLES TEAM]]>MARIGOLD SMOKEY NIGHT edition made its debut as the opening of DASA collection, one-decade anniversary celebration of TULISAN. A special label is sewn inside every work of art from this edition, with Melissa Sunjaya’s handwriting marking 10 years of our dedication in artisanal craftsmanship. Thanks to the supports of the avid collectors and believers of our work, we have managed to raise a new paradigm on serigraphy and artisanal craftsmanship from Indonesia. Our vision is to strive for higher appreciations towards serigraphy art.
The ink sketch of Marigold was drawn by Melissa on 10 April 2011, when she collaborated with a French writer, Virginie Kasse, for the book ‘Les Papillons des Victor’. The choice of this botanical object was due to the layering symbols of marigold in different cultures. Marigold symbolizes creativity, passion, and also fragility. There are layers of self-disrespect in many makers of artwork in Indonesia, for there are seldom public appreciations towards art and fair infrastructure in the creative industry. This sense is contrary to what was done by the Indonesian ancestors from Ancient Mataram.
Since the beginning of the sixth century, the Indonesian ancestors are renowned for their richness in artisanal crafts, maritime skills, and economic management. The Borobudur temple serves as proof of this great civilization and culture from the Ancient Mataram Kingdom. The research and paradigm we implement in Tulisan are inherited from our ancestor’s way of life. Melissa’s Marigold sketch reflects on our work philosophy is to create relentlessly in the hope to restore the glory of artisanal craftsmanship of the New East Indies.
This year, we are re-issuing our classic MARIGOLD Series with notable upgrades from sustainability aspects. Together with a local laboratory, we have managed to develop a new formula of the protective coatings which covers the overall serigraphy surface and has obtained eco-certification for this formula. This development has reduced the carbon footprint of our production. Thus, our serigraphy atelier is also becoming cleaner. The most important in this achievement is that it was only made possible by our collectors and their never-ending supports.
With this collection, we present our COLLECTOR’S PRIVILEGE program, an honorary entitlement for our collectors to pre-book MARIGOLD SMOKEY NIGHT edition which will be released on 22 April 2020. Aside from ordering early, the other benefit is to purchase with 10% off the regular prices. All shipments of these pre-bookings will be processed starting on 22 April 2020.

Since I founded Tulisan with my mother in 2010, we have dedicated our time to produce more than 1000 art editions. Each edition was hand-screened using eco-friendly water-based pigments. Each artwork was originated from pen-and-ink sketches and layers of imaginative stories. Over this first decade of publishing art, Tulisan has kept a decent library of my art prints. To celebrate this labour of love, we are converting many of these exquisite textiles into tailor-made memorabilia of totes and accessories. All products are handmade with fair and ethical practices.
If you have missed any editions in the past, this would be the chance to expand and diversify your Tulisan Art Collection. I will be available at our Darmawangsa Boutique to sign your collection, old and new.
Your appreciation towards our work has empowered us to present a new paradigm on Indonesia’s contemporary art dan design. We strive to deliver excellence in the finest artisanal craftsmanship from the New East Indies. Thank you for believing in us.
Sincerely,
Melissa Sunjaya

THE LEGACY is a series of heritage artwork from the New East Indies. The term ‘East Indies’ stems from the geographical fact of Indonesia, which was once known by the West to be the endless source of nature’s best. The attribute ‘New’ stands for a fresh perspective about the generation who believe in themselves. This new generation will inherit this archipelago. At the heart of freedom, they will cultivate this earth, celebrate individuality, and love their peers without any prejudice.
This crossbody messenger bag has a detachable wide sling and short handle. Its vertical format and overall outside pockets place this bag as a contemporary version of the standard brief case or portfolio carrier.
‘Siesta’ is an Italian tradition of taking a long break during the afternoon. People take a siesta to revitalize the body and mind from the heat of the summer. Some take naps, drink coffee, do yoga or go to the park. This lightweight casual bag with detachable zipped pouch is a perfect companion for your siesta hours.
