Behind the Glasshouse: Tulisan's Plaza Senayan Store
Tulisan’s new flagship store is located in the prime shopping area of Plaza Senayan and encompasses total area of 88 sq. meters. This beautiful space, inspired by the use of vintage greenhouses as artist studios, houses our limited edition artist-illustrated bags and accessories, home products, art prints, stationery, and apparel collections.
Designed by Melissa Sunjaya and her mother Didi H. Hersubeno (founder and co-founder), the fresh and whimsical space is adorned with homey corners, hand lettering, and handmade furnishings to create a story-telling experience. As part of their creative vision, the store will change its window dressing theme on a monthly basis. This December, the theme portrays a romantic dinner party in the middle of a winter white pine forest. The table setting for two was curated by Didi using a passionate red color palette and our Anima playing cards as name tags for the imaginary guests. This theatrical theme parallels our new Prints Editions of Tulisan’s Fall-Winter 2014-2015: Plume & Wonder. Melissa hand painted the window with silhouette of the coniferous trees.
A selection of furniture and room fixtures were designed by Didi herself. Having purchased reclaimed pine wood planks from a local street vendor she constructed much of the store’s homemade furniture, including the garden sink, using artisanal woodworking techniques. Melissa infused sentimental elements into the space by bringing in refurbished vintage colonial furniture from her grandmother’s house, along with several antique ornaments found in flea markets. In fact the chandelier hanging from the center ceiling was a special item Melissa inherited from her grandmother – a historical piece from the Dutch colonial era.
Our new space features an exterior facade inspired by the rustic windows of artist lofts in California– where Melissa lived for almost 12 years. The facade consists of 80-glass panels held together by welded iron grids, painted in Tulisan’s signature dark grey color. A color which Tulisan interprets as a symbol of contentment. Outside, on the left side of the main entrance, there is a small patio to be used as a stage displaying the main collection’s theme.
The flow of the spatial design naturally leads visitors to move clockwise, whereby they are welcomed by a large LCD monitor displaying short films featuring the voice of the brand. This area also serves as a stage to display our ‘By MS with Love’ collection, Collector’s editions, and the highest valued segment of the brand. Following this section shoppers will find our ‘Originals Editions’ – illustrated editions with characters from Tulisan’s classic series of original short fiction. This section is accompanied by a quaint dressing room, as it is a display area for apparel, accessories and art print collections from the ‘Originals Editions’.
The center area, underneath the antique chandelier, is akin to a comfortable living room complete with a loveseat, coffee table, and stools for the guests to sit while they delve into several periodicals and press clippings, portraying the evolution of the brand and its founding artist.
The right side of the store features library shelving with a rolling wooden ladder, displaying the latest collection of Tulisan’s ‘Prints Editions.’ The top shelf of this library cabinet is reserved for our giclée art prints. These exceptional prints are produced using museum quality archival inks.
Our storage room is reminiscent of a quaint garden shed. The remarkable aspect of this tiny glasshouse is that it contains a spacious mezzanine level manager’s office above the storage area. next to this white glasshouse is the kitchen area with an adorable wooden garden sink designed by Didi. This section displays Tulisan’s home wear. A collection that was sustainably developed through an on-going philanthropic partnership with Kampus Diakonia Modern.
