The Matriarch

The Matriarch is a literary work by Kartini Sjahrir that reflects on women who lead with wisdom, compassion, and moral courage. Through the character of Marian, Kartini explores the role of women as the center of balance within both family and society—figures who preserve continuity amidst change and embody empathy as aform of leadership.

Melissa Sunjaya offered a visual dimension by interpreting selected themes and emotions of the story through an honest and profound portrayal of Indonesian women. Her illustrations bring forth a dialogue between two women across generations, weaving together literary and visual storytelling that celebrates the essence of true leadership—born from understanding, embracing, and honoring differences as the foundation
of humanity and civilization.
