Ragam Ni Si Marian
Ragam Ni Si Marian is a historical novel by Kartini Sjahrir. It unfolds women’s roles and conditions from the national awakening to the post-independence period of the Republic of Indonesia, from 1900 to 1956, through a rich fictional romance that explores the intricate relationships between the native, the Dutch, and interracial societies. Through her anthropological research, Kartini Sjahrir delves into the complexities of culture, politics, and economics in Indonesia.
Melissa Sunjaya offered a visual dimension by illustrating selected fragments and locations of the story through a multicultural nuance from both East and West, relaying our shared stories to dismantle slavery and racial discrimination. Melissa’s twelve illustrations draw inspirations from modernism, reflecting influences from jazz music, the evolution of romantic literature, and European artistic movement posters of that era. TULISAN has reimagined this collaboration into a hand-crafted collection intended to nurture an interest in history through the art of storytelling.
