Fits Just Right

Pasar has always been one of my favourite places to wander about. I enjoy walking through narrow aisles, choosing groceries one by one, and exchanging a few words with the unsung heroes behind each stall who quietly dedicate themselves to one simple thing and doing it well, every single day. There is always someone new to meet and someone familiar to greet again.

That morning, a traditional jamu vendor (or as we call them, bakul jamu) walked past me through the bustle of the market; one of my favourite sights which has become increasingly rare in Jakarta. I called her over for a glass of beras kencur mixed with kunir asem.

As she prepared the comforting herbal drink, we began talking. She told me she was from Solo. It was a brief but sweet encounter, one that I know will stay with me long after I leave the market. By the time I finished with my shopping, I realised I had brought back something more than the groceries I had come for.

This is what I love most about traditional markets. They're places where I often leave with more than I expected, a reminder to cherish the joy of spontaneity and the simple happiness that we can find in daily routines. It has always felt more like bringing home little pieces of people's stories.
